Split the day by what each part needs. Small furniture and company are easy to share. The washer, the sofa, the stairs and a building's elevator window are heavy, awkward or tied to a clock, so those are the parts to hand to a small paid crew while friends carry boxes.

This is not a choice between money and no money. Friends cost something too, usually their Saturday and their backs. The question is what you want to spend, and what you are willing to ask of people you care about.

What friends are great at

Friends are good at the things that do not need practice:

  • Packing and wrapping, especially when it is a social day.
  • Carrying boxes and light items.
  • Cleaning an empty place after the move.
  • Watching kids or pets so the adults can work.
  • Keeping you calm when the day gets long.

If your move is a few rooms, you have a good number of helpers and nothing heavy, a friends-only day can work well.

What tends to go wrong

Trouble usually comes from a few things, and none of it is anyone's fault.

  • No equipment. Friends may not arrive with moving blankets, straps, a dolly or a ramp plan. Without them, big pieces get dragged and carried by hand. The rental company can supply some of this. U-Haul, for example, says that dollies, hand trucks and furniture pads can be rented at its locations. Someone still has to plan for it.
  • Different schedules. People arrive late, leave early and have a family dinner at 4 p.m. A plan that needs six people all day can fall apart when two of them leave at lunch.
  • Heavy items. A dresser is a two-person lift, and two people who have never carried together can struggle on stairs.
  • Injury risk. OSHA lists lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, and pushing and pulling heavy loads among the risk factors for muscle and joint injuries. A Cal/OSHA lifting guide hosted by the CDC says to keep the load close, lift with your legs, step to turn instead of twisting, and use team lifting for heavy or bulky objects. It also cites a NIOSH limit of 51 pounds under ideal conditions, lowered when the lift is awkward. Carrying a box of books down a stairwell is far from ideal.
  • Strain on the friendship. Nobody enjoys saying "this is too heavy for me" in front of the group. A broken lamp or a scratched wall is awkward to talk about between friends.

What a paid crew changes

A crew does the same job all day and can look at a load and decide how it should go. For you, that means:

  • The heavy pieces are handled by people who do this work and plan the load with you. Tell us what blankets, straps and dollies you have, and we know what to bring.
  • You agree on a start time and a plan ahead, instead of waiting to see who shows up.
  • Your friends do not have to risk their backs on the part that is hardest.

The tradeoff is cost, and it is a fair one to weigh. Our moving labor starts at $180 for two movers for two daytime hours, which is the minimum even for a single couch. These are labor rates only. The page on what moving labor costs near Raleigh shows how the hours add up.

A hybrid that works for many moves

You do not have to pick one. Here is a plan that works:

  1. Friends pack and carry boxes over the days before and on the day.
  2. A small crew handles the heavy furniture and appliances: the sofa, mattresses, dressers, the washer and dryer, bookshelves, a dining table.
  3. You start the crew in the morning, then friends keep going on boxes while the heavy pieces are already on their way.

If the heavy list is short, two movers for the two-hour minimum may be enough. The guide on how many movers you need can help you choose a crew size. If you are renting a truck, the crew can load it too, which is the idea in our guide on hiring movers just to load a rental truck.

Running a friends-and-family moving day

If you go with friends, a little structure makes the day better for everyone.

  • Pick one person to be in charge. Not necessarily you. You will be answering questions all day. One coordinator can say who goes where.
  • Give people clear jobs. "You and Sam do the kitchen boxes" works better than "grab whatever."
  • Label every box with a room, and tape a matching sign on each door at the new place.
  • Clear the path first. Move rugs, open doors and take off door stops before the first heavy carry.
  • Set a start and an end time, and say it out loud. People help more happily when they know when they can go home.
  • Feed people. Pizza, sandwiches and plenty of drinks. It is the cheapest thing you can do to keep a day going.
  • Keep the heavy items for the people who volunteer for them, and let anyone say no without a speech.

In warm weather, plan for the heat. OSHA says people who are new to heat need time to adjust, and recommends fluids, water, rest and shade and frequent breaks. The National Weather Service advises you to reduce or reschedule strenuous activity until the coolest part of the day and to drink water often even when you are not thirsty. For a summer move, start early and keep water within reach.

If your helpers are from a church small group or a neighbor's porch, say thank you to each one personally. Many hands is a real gift, and it feels like one when someone says so.

A simple rule for deciding

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is anything heavy or awkward? A very heavy or awkward item, a big sectional or a lot of stairs points toward a crew.
  2. Is the schedule firm? A building elevator window, a lease end or a truck return time points toward a crew.
  3. How many reliable helpers do you really have? Count the people who have said yes and who you are sure will come.

If the answers are "no, no, plenty", ask friends. If any is "yes" or "not sure", consider at least a short block of paid help for the hard part. If you are not sure about a specific item, tell us about it when you ask for a quote and we will tell you honestly whether it is a job for us.
