For a two-bedroom, plan on two movers for a longer stretch, or three if there are stairs. For a three-bedroom house or bigger, three or four movers is the safer plan. The table below gives rough hours for each. Hours go up with the size of the home, and they go up fast when stairs, long carries or heavy furniture get added.

Crew size and hours work together. A bigger crew finishes sooner, a smaller crew takes longer, and both can be the right choice for the same home. This guide shows a rough starting point, what moves the number, and how the cost works so you can pick a plan with your eyes open.

A rough starting point by move size

This is the rough guide on our moving-cost page. It is a starting point, not a promise. Every home is different, so treat each line as the middle of a range.

What you are movingCrew and hoursDaytime labor total
A couch, a studio, or unloading a small load2 movers for 2 hours$180
A one-bedroom apartment, one end (loading or unloading)2 movers for 3 hours$270
A two-bedroom, loading or unloading2 movers for 4 hours$351
A two-bedroom with stairs3 movers for 3 hours$390
A three-bedroom house, one end3 movers for 4 hours$507
A full house, load and unload nearby4 movers for 4 hours$663

The totals are moving-labor rates only. They are for daytime work and already include the hour-4 discount where it applies. Packing, supplies and anything else on your quote are separate lines.

"One end" means we are loading or unloading, not both. For a move with two addresses, each end has its own carrying time.

What changes the answer

The size of the home gets you close. These things move the number up or down.

  • Stairs. Every trip up or down takes longer, and a heavy piece on stairs needs more hands. Stairs are a common reason to add a third mover.
  • Elevators. A shared elevator can be a bottleneck. If it must be reserved, or only works for part of the day, tell us. Our guide to apartment moves in Raleigh covers elevators, parking and long carries.
  • Carry distance. If the parking spot is far from the door, every box and every sofa goes farther. A long carry across a parking lot slows every single trip.
  • Heavy or awkward pieces. A washer, a big dresser, a sectional or a long bookcase needs two people on the piece at all times. A third mover keeps the rest of the work going while two carry it.
  • How ready the boxes are. Sealed, labeled boxes stacked near the door go fast. Open drawers, loose items and half-packed rooms go slowly.
  • Furniture that must come apart. Bed frames, tables and desks take time to take down and put back. Tell us which pieces, and we plan for it.
  • How much is in the garage, attic or shed. These areas are easy to forget when counting rooms. They can add real work.

Two movers, three movers or four

Here is what each crew size does well.

Two movers can carry most of what a studio or one-bedroom holds. One person works each end of a sofa or dresser. Two movers are a good fit when the carry is short, the boxes are ready and there are no stairs.

Three movers change how the day flows. Two people can carry a heavy piece while the third wraps furniture, builds the load or moves boxes. That keeps everyone busy and cuts the waiting. Three is a good fit for a two-bedroom with stairs, or a house with a lot of boxes and a few heavy items.

Four movers make sense for a full house. Two pairs can work two heavy pieces at the same time, or two people can load while two carry. On a big move, the extra crew can take real time off the day.

Why a third mover can finish sooner, and what that costs

More hands do not just add up. They remove waiting. With two movers, a heavy piece stops everything else while both carry it. With three, the third person keeps working. That is why a bigger crew can finish a job in fewer hours.

The cost side is simple arithmetic. For daytime moving labor, two movers cost $90 an hour and three cost $130 an hour (every crew size gets the same 10% off from hour 4). So a third mover only saves money when the job gets about a third shorter.

Sometimes it does. A job that needs lots of carrying can shorten a lot with a third person. Other times it does not, such as a short job with a clear path, where two movers work at the speed the job allows. There is no rule that more movers cost less in total, and none that they cost more. It depends on the job.

Choose the plan that fits your day. If you have a hard stop, such as a lease ending, a closing or a building that only lets you use the elevator for a set window, a bigger crew can be worth it even when the total is a bit higher. If you have a flexible day, a smaller crew for more hours may suit you.

The minimum, the discount and evening work

Every job is at least two movers for two hours, which is $180 in the daytime. That applies to a single couch, too.

From hour 4, the hourly rate drops by 10%. Hours 1 to 3 are at the regular rate, so longer jobs cost a little less for each added hour.

Time worked between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. costs 25% more, and only for those hours. If your plan runs into the evening, the calculator on our pricing page shows the total with a start time. We work 24 hours Monday through Saturday, depending on crew availability, and Sunday is closed.

How to estimate your own hours

You can get a decent estimate before you get in touch.

  1. Count the big pieces. List beds, sofas, dressers, tables, the washer and dryer, and anything that needs two people. These set the pace.
  2. Count the boxes. Many small boxes take more trips than a few large ones.
  3. Look at the path. Walk from the farthest room to where the load goes. Note the stairs, the doorways and the distance to the parking spot.
  4. Check the access. Find out if a shared elevator needs a reservation and whether the parking is close.
  5. Pick the crew from the table above. Add a step up if stairs, long carries or several heavy pieces are in the way.
  6. Leave a little room. A plan that fits a bit loose beats one that runs over.

If you are between two sizes, go to the bigger crew or add an hour.

Loading only, unloading only, or both

You do not have to hire help at both ends. If friends are waiting at the new place, book loading only. If you have already loaded and are arriving, book unloading only. Each end has its own stairs and carry, so the crew for one end can be different from the other. Our home moving page explains how the two ends fit together as one job.

If you are weighing hired help against friends, the guide on friends versus hired movers lays out the trade-offs.

What to send when you ask for a quote

Not sure how many movers or how many hours? You do not have to decide first. Send your home size, any stairs, the heaviest pieces and the distance from the parking spot to the door, and Joey will talk through a crew size and hours with you. The quote form also asks for the date, a preferred start time and the town or ZIP for each stop. Your exact address can wait until Joey texts you back. Requesting a quote costs nothing, and it does not hold a date until you and Joey agree on the plan and the price.
